Professional Experience

  • Creative Ink Freelance Services, Editor and Writer, June 2008 – present

As a freelance editor, I copyedit and proofread publications for clients such as the RAND Corporation, the Wilson Center’s Asia Program and China Environment Forum, and independent authors.

I am also the writer and editor of BookNotes, the monthly e-newsletter for the Washington Book Publishers.

And I’ve already mentioned this. but I founded Inner Loop Lit, an online review of books, bookstores, authors, and events. As with this site, I am solely responsible for the content and layout of ILL.

What do I do here? What don’t I do here?

I copyedit and proofread in-house manuscripts and annual reports, and I write news stories, event summaries, news releases, and marketing copy for print and online distribution. I also update our website with news stories and events, and I’m helping to plan the forthcoming website redesign.

Much of my job is project management, as I coordinate the work of interns, authors, freelancers, co-publishers, and rights-holders, among others. I also manage the center’s social and new media initiatives, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and blogging platforms.

I use graphic design software to create print and online media guides, brochures, catalogs and fliers. I also created and currently manage databases of publications, contacts, and other info.

In my spare time, I am a leader of the Staff Committee, a vehicle for addressing work-related improvements.

  • P&F II, Inc/Bike Parts Outlet, Sales & Administrative Assistant, July 2007 – October 2007

I created and coded in CSS the sales advertisement templates for thousands of the company’s products. I also monitored sales listings, responded to information requests, and processed online sales and payments, while managing databases of all products and sales entries.

My duties also included reviewing and updating commercial tenant files and leases, managing personnel files, and supervising an office construction project.

I managed the inventory, supervised the sales floor, communicated with suppliers, and designed new products. I also supervised the installation of a new Point of Sale system, implemented policies on sales records and reports, and controlled all cash and credit sales.

I reviewed, processed, and presented loan applications to the credit committee, and then voted to approve or disapprove applications for credit. In my time there, I became familiar with teller procedures, including deposits, transfers, money orders, and check cashing.

I supervised, scheduled, and evaluated a student staff of approximately 20; coordinated housing and conference services according to guest needs; and aided residents with package delivery, room lockouts, cleaning and moving equipment, and maintenance issues.

I created and designed articles on scholarships in the arts and humanities for the Duke Ellington School website, using the web design software Dreamweaver.

I also transcribed and edited written and spoken materials for the graduate thesis project of Sarah Redmond, Master’s candidate.

  • Gadzooks (now Forever21), Assistant Manager, November 2002 – April 2004

I supervised sales floor transactions, daily product promotion, shipment processing, and customer assistance policies.

I also scheduled and evaluated a staff of approximately 15, communicating sales goals and company policies and procedures.
