Yale University Press chose, at a late stage and on the advice of the highest-ranking Muslim in the UN, to pull incendiary comics from a copublished book.
Jytte Klausen’s The Cartoons That Shook the World included cartoons of Muhammed, which were taken out at the last minute. Yale UP’s decision was based upon the advice of Ibrahim Gambari and Marcia Inhorn, chair of the council on Middle East studies at Yale.
Inhorn said: “If Yale publishes this book with any of the proposed illustrations, it is likely to provoke a violent outcry.”
Gambari warned: “It will cause riots I predict from Indonesia to Nigeria.”
Whoa. In this case, a little interference may not be as bad as it sounds.
